Libertarian Party of Volusia County Supports Bill to End Qualified Immunity
DeLand, Fla. – The Libertarian Party of Volusia County voted to support the Ending Qualified Immunity Act, a federal bill introduced to eliminate qualified immunity for law enforcement and other public officials.
Galvanized by the death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis Police, Reps. Justin Amash (L-Mich.) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D–Mass.) introduced this bill to Congress last week. This federal bill has tri-partisan support and will be a step in holding accountable those elected or appointed officials that operate outside of the law. “We encourage all residents of Volusia County to contact their representatives in Congress and urge them to support the bill,” said Lea Bartos, Chair of the Libertarian Party of Volusia County Chair.
The bill is endorsed by ACLU of Massachusetts, Arab American Institute, Constitutional Accountability Center, Due Process Institute, Lawyers for Civil Rights, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, National Urban League, Republican Liberty Caucus, The Justice Collaborative, and Young Americans for Liberty, among other civil society groups.
